HISTORY: The SOCOM is an awesome cartridge that is basically a long 50AE (O.A.L. of 1.575″) with a rebated .308 style head configuration, necked down to utilize a .458″ diameter projectiles. It has been chambered in some bolt guns but it’s claim to fame is in the AR-15 platform. SOCOM is short name for “Special Operations Command”, the cartridge came about in 2002 after informal discussion of Special Op discussing short comings from the standard 5.56 in post Mogadishu. A plus for reloaders and shooters of the 458 SOCOM is the wide selection of .458 bullets to choose from.
