Use care when reloading for a 45 COLT, older firearms in good working condition and replicas need to stay at 45 COLT-revolver data with velocities remaining under 1000 fps. Colt revolvers made prior to 1942 had a bore diameter of .454. T/C’s and Ruger (except new model Vaquero) an be loaded to higher velocities, most modern manuals have two separate sets of data.
HISTORY: In 1873 Colt released the Single-Action Army Relover (SAA) often referred to as the “Peace Maker”. 255-grain bullet sitting on top of 40 grains of black powder created the king of cartridges until the magnums appeared on the scene. The 45 Colt also was referred to as “Long Colt” to distinguish the difference from the 45 Schofield, a shorter cartridge which can be fired in firearms chambered for 45 Colt but Colt’s can not be used in 45 Schofield revolvers.
