HISTORY OF 284 WIN: A brass case design with a rebated rim with a large diameter body that has a 35 degree shoulder was unique in 1963. The design enabled short action rifles to be chambered in 284 Winchester and obtain greater ballistics than before. The rebated rim allowed the use of standard bolt faces. The 284 Win was introduced in the Model 88 and 100 Winchester rifles. The rifles are no longer manufactured but the idea of this cartridge can be seen in Winchesters WSM and Remington Ultra Mag series. Modern powders and the popularity of long range shooting revived this round, the only draw back is the periodic production of brass. There really is not a steady source of the 284 Win once the supply of Winchester brass is sold out and forming brass from others can be a lengthy task since this cartridge is unique.
