A lengthened version of the 222 Remington called the .222 Special, now known as the 5.56mm NATO. Remington introduced the cartridge as a commercial round referred to as the 223 REMINGTON, many of the sporting rifles chambered for the 223 have 1-12 to 1-14 inch twist rates which is slower than 5.56X45mm faster twist of 1-7 to 1-8 inches.
