I am searching for 44 RUSSIAN load data using a 180-grain Cast Lead bullet. The handbooks that list this round show data on 165-grain and 200-grain. My wife’s favorite revolver is a 4-inch Rossi Model 720 chambered in 44 Special and I wanted to create an easy-handling round. This handgun was a gift from Todd Georgi, former editor of Hornady Handbooks, he felt she needed something larger while hiking around.

Winchester 231 was the powder I selected. The max powder charge on the 200-grain lead bullet is 5.0 grains (900 fps), and the upper limit on 165-grains is 5.2 (1002 fps), creating a reference on what not to exceed. I charge the test rounds with 4.6 grains, chronograph average reading of 687 fps with a spread of 29 fps. Very little recoil, a completely comfortable target round to shoot.
